the Mixtress identified a Suede song that I had assumed was Suede, and #700 turned out to be Hurl . . .I found that after getting the album with #59 on it.

this is just crazy
You've got a tuba on the bass, a trumpet on the lead, a xylophone and a guy screaming. The part with the xylophone sounds just like Girls Against Boys. Dude even sings like Scott Mccloud when he tries to sing. "I disconnect waterway systems, i fall asleep thinking". Also, says he wants to kill something. . .dont' know what? (the singer? the drummer? the sexplayer? get right down to it. we gotta amuse ourselves somehow. . . . .make it alright)
This one sounds kind of sad too, but not as sad as squirrels.

in this song, there are two things I can pick out that the seemingly hyper singer is saying.
1. "sustain time limit"
2. "EJECT EJECT EJECT EJECT WOOO!!!" (I will not be held responsible if you get that stuck in your head and start yelling it at random inopportune times)
Somewhere I have another song that I'm pretty sure is also by whoever this is.
(some song where he keep saying "i'm a small white animal", and there's looping guitar feedback)

harsh, fast, angry hardcore punk that was recorded on a night when reception was not that good at all.
The vocals sound a little bit like Henry Rollins, but I really don't think this is Black Flag.

RANDOM FUCKING TUNES
I'm gonna wait a little bit to post another tape, because that's a lot of songs in that last post.
I've found a lot of new shit i love, and here is some right now. . .
-Odd Future
after the disappointment that was Saigon's album that has been so long in the making it's ridiculous (I knew he'd come out with something before Papoose though), I was introduced to the hip-hop I've heard since finally checking out Dr. Dooom a month ago
I liked Death + Taxes mag on facebook. One day, they posted this. .

It's like a name a powerviolence band would have (John Cougar Concentration Camp?)
. . .this is a shoegaze band though.
They're so much like My Bloody Valentine, they have Bilinda lookalike in the band.
She plays bass though.
That's from the new album, that apparently is supposed to be out already.
and with that, TIME FOR METAL
-Dragged Into Sunlight
their album is actually from 2009. . . but I think it's about to get rereleased on Prosthetic Records.
a mix of sludge, and black metal and death metal that makes me think of Incantation a little bit.
-good buddies of mine from the Decibel message board have said this is the year of the grind (mainly because Pig Destroyer are supposed to put out an album, but Gridlink, Total Fucking Destruction, Rotten Sound, Noisear, Maruta, Psudoku, and a fuckton more will be bringing it too), but i gotta say, it's been a fucking great for techinical death metal
the good kind, that's heavily influenced by Gorguts
Exhibit A. ULCERATE
I've loved Ulcerate since Of Fracture and Failure.
I wish they'd come play in the USA. Maybe one day. Maybe they'll get on MDF next year. . .who knows?
Their new album that comes out this year, is some crazy shit.
Imagine if one of those hydra head atmospheric sludge bands got a death metal drummer and told him "play twice as fast as we're playing".

Exhibit B. PYRRHON
Pyrrhon are from NYC. They're a combination of Gorguts and Deathspell Omega.

this is HELLA Gorguts
That's just a practice of a brand new song with no vocals
Willowtip is putting out an album from them this year.

what was this stuff called??
so remember this post where I posted a Rodan song that would have been a random tape had I not just found out who it was by youtubing them?
Well, there were a LOT of bands that sounded like them in the 90s, a few of which shared members with Rodan.
. . . .when the local station played these bands songs though, they would almsot never say who they were.
(it was many years before I found out who sang "good morning captain". . .and I only had the end of the song, because that was what was playing when i turned on the radio back then and I just slammed the record button when I heard the "I MISS YOU" part. So, that was a long time with the end of that song playing in my head.)
I collected a lot of these songs.
I hope maybe someone can tell me which band is which.
I already know Hurl, Slint, Silkworm, Dianoga, Rodan, June of 44 and the Shipping News
. . . .but I haven't heard EVERYTHING from them yet. .
so

so anyway, I've been asking everyone I could possibly think of that might know who does this doom metal cover of the Black Sabbath classic "paranoid".
They've got VERY low death grunts, a violin, and some guy who sounds like he's in a hardcore band yelling.
It's fucking weird.
As far as I know, it's not Type O or My Dying Bride.
Those were my only possible guesses.
Now, let us recap the songs from last year that still haven't been identified.

it's a good thing I didn't resolve to post more tapes, I'm already a month behind.
Tonight, I dug up the tapes again and started ripping songs onto the harddrive, and a hilarious thing happened.
I went and googled a line from two of the songs. . .a method that rarely ever works. . .and found two of the songs.
One of them was this one
yeah, this one.
I couldn't believe it came from 71.
that sounds like it was made at least a year ago.
It was probably 1996 or 7 when I taped it.
. . .and all that time I thought I'd NEVER heard T-Rex before. Hilarious.
The other song was this one
first of all, props on naming yourselves like a soccer team.
Sultans of Ping FC.
That's fucking awesome.
second of all, this was on the same tape as the T-Rex song. That might not mean they were played the same night, but who knows.
I am actually going to post one I don't know though.

I FINALLY FOUND ANOTHER METAL SONG ON ONE OF MY OLD TAPES FROM HIGH SCHOOL THAT NEVER GOT IDENTIFIED!!!!
For some reason, I think it might be one of those big thrash bands. I don't know why? A few of them were branching out in weird directions in those days, and I rather liked some of it.
the riff is fucked up, but not all that technical. it could very well get stuck in your head for quite some time. I have no idea who it could be though.
I've been looking for this one to put it up on the blog for QUITE A WHILE now. It's not a forgettable song by any means. . .for me anyway.
lemme know if you have an idea.

who did this hilarious Liz Phair cover??
he's just yelling it. he sounds drunk. it's amazing.
(no, I didn't know it was a Liz Phair song until tonight)

I don't know how annoyed people are going to be with my #1. It's from my #1 album. Whatever. You gotta love the Predator vocals. I couldn't even pick which song was the best song. That song wins though, because the intro and outro aren't so long.
Harvey Milk's album is supposed to be listened to in one sitting. . . . but I keep going back to "I alone got up and left". It's the catchiest thing on the record. It has that awesome solo that you could annoy anyone to death by singing along with, and the way they harmonize at the end is even better than how Intronaut did it on their album.

Excrementory Grindfuckers. . . . . the biggest problem I had making this list was picking an Excrementory Grindfuckers song. There's too many good songs on it. I purposely discounted the straight up parodies. . .or else "schnapsflash" (thier excellent parody of the Flash Gordon theme song. . . .and man, do they like Queen or what? They do Bohemian Rhapsody too) would have been on here in a second. There's a far les chaotic song i could have put in that stop, but it wouldn't be MY list if I went that rout.
Punished Earth are my favorite slam band. They sound way more pissed off than the others, especially in the song I picked.
Dangers win because the lyrics are so harsh. There just wasn't enough of that going on this year (even with Acacia Strain releasing an album. . .and I'll say, it wasn't even half bad).
Torche only had one song with a bomb drop in it on their EP, but the song is that good.

maybe not as catchy as Cleptocracy, but what is??
39. Ladyscraper - Pink
in a year where Venetian Snares released a full length. . .somehow. . .he was topped. How? By a kick drum the hits you like an aluminum baseball bat. .constantly. It's so abrasive, it's damn near metal.
38. War From a Harlots Mouth - MMX
So, you just made a major improvement to your sound and snared a ton of nonbelievers with your last record. Where do you go next? Bring back some of the speed and tune lower than hell.
37. Deathspell Omega - paralectus
I don't even really have words. I can say though, that the hype is real. This doesn't sound like any black metal I've ever heard. I can't really think of what it reminds me of, honestly. It's weird as fuck, but not in that way that nu-Mayhem is weird.
36. Flourishing - a momentary sense of the immediate world
One of the most perfect combinations of Discordance Axis and Gorguts you're ever going to here.
35. Fukpig - Belief is the Death of Intelligence
one year later, still pissed the fuck off, with twice the blast
34. Black Kites - Songs Written While Things Were Changing
this band should not be flying under the radar like they have been. If you look at their last.fm profile right now, my best of post from last year is still on the page. . .and they weren't even on my list last year (because I didn't hear the album until I'd already posted the list). Here they were, one year later. This band waste no time kicking ass. Hurry up and get into it.
33. Killing Joke - Absolute Dissent
I mean it's kind of a given this is going to show up here isn't it? They took the best of the 80s stuff and the 90s stuff (well okay, nothing like Extremities. . .) andmixed it up real good.
32. Triptykon - Eparistera Daimones
like Celtic Frost never went away. . . .even though they did.
31. Thou - Summit
of the highly anticipated, heavily hyped sludge releases of 2010, this is the one that truly delivered.
30. Jesus Cröst - 010
because as far as I know yaecopsae didn't release anything this year. . . .so. . .next best thing.
29. Japanische Kampfhörspiele - Bilder Fressen Strom
just as easy to get into as the EP from last year, even with longer songs and more experimentation.
28. The Chariot - Long Live
an album a year, back to back, and the only good christian metalcore band left in existence remains killer. .without a band member overhaul no less.
27. Fear Factory - mechanize
Friends, this is one of the great comebacks of 2010. Sepultura level drama surrounds this band, but Dino and Burt got back on speaking terms and with Strapping Young Lads rhythm section no less brought us the first great Fear Factory album since Demanufacture. Cheese Burt turned down the cheese. Dino tuned down to hell. Fun was had.
26. Clinging to the Trees of a Forest Fire - songs of ill hope and desperation
when it comes to death/grind, I can't think of anything that came out that was as bleak as this jawn right here.
25. Circle of Dead Children - psalm of the grand destroyer
the long awaited return of the only band allowed to get away with having pig squeals. . .and you'll know why after you hear it
24. Gods And Queens - untitled
the songs still have no names, the lyrics are still bummer as fuck, and this is still the best thing you can put on on a dreary ass day. . .which there were a lot of this year.
23. Psychotic Despair - personal identity
if you're a fan of Ingrowing or Afgrund's latest album, do yourself a favor and pick this up.
22. Magrudergrind - crusher
crushING :)
21. Withered - Dualitas
this was the record where Withered won me over on CD. I already liked thier live show, but I didn't think Folie Circulair sounded quite as good as they did in a live setting. This sounds more like it, not to mention the songs are better.
20. Throats - Throats
Go figure they broke up already. Such a great record, short as it is. Hell, all they did was splits and this album. We hardly knew them. They sure did leave a path of destruction behind them though.
19. cali≠gari - janai
The first "j-rock" band to make it on to one of these lists in a LONG TIME. It's tiher mest material since Dai 7, and apparently they broke up AGAIN right after. Considering they broke up after what wasn't their best record the first time, this is a much better note to leave on.
18. The Abominable Iron Sloth - the Id Will Overcome
the Sloth bring a more traditional sludge sound than on the first record, and they do so really well.
17. Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini
I'd all but given up on this band. Thier prog side had taken over, and fun was not had. This year though, it seems they've decided to play *gasp* METAL.?! In doing so, they've given us the best "nu-enslaved" album. Yes, even with Jonas Renske impersonator keyboardist playing good cop.
16. Fistula - Goat
This is some harsh shit. I went a good two months listening to this non-stop.
15. Punished Earth - rhapsodies of decay
Did I say Circle of Dead Children were the only band allowed to have pig squeals? I meant only AMERICAN band.
14. Early Graves - GONER
The tragic death of vocalist Makh Daniels hit me pretty hard. This album, hit even harder. True, a hundred other bands made this album this year. True, the first album was better. . .but the fact is only two "entombed-core" bands were good enough to make this list. These guys made the list because they kept it high on the death(and in some cases GRIND) and low on the "n'roll".
13. Mr. Death - Death Suits You
still the best of the new old death metal bands
12. HAARP - the filth
in a year where "beard metal" was all the rage, haarp play fucking SLUDGE
11. Admiral Angry - a fire to burn down the world
The late great Daniel Krauss left us all with a little bit less than a half hour of pure, unadulterated OUCH. 23:38. You look at that, you're expecting maybe 2 minutes of song and 20 minutes of ambient what-the-fuck-ever. no. The last 7 minutes of the song are a final killing blow. A spirit bomb if you will. I really hate to cheapen such an experience with a Dragon Ball reference, but it fits.
10. Dax Riggs - say goodnight to the world
the voice. . .is. . .BACK!
9. Excrementory Grindfuckers - Headliner Der Herzen /The Left Rights - bad choice made easy
The most fun things I heard this year. Excrementory bringing the perfect combo of heaviness and being a fucking laugh riot. . .whether you know the language or not. They're no novelty band. The Left Rights returned this year, surpassing the band from which they spawned. They'd make you dance, if you weren't so busy rolling on the floor laughing your ass off.
8. Nails - unsilent death
Nails are the other "entombed-core" band that made it here. 90% of this is straight up grindcore like Trap Them used to make way back when.
7. Masakari - the profit feeds
The problem with a lot of these new d-beat bands is they're just not fast enough. This band gets it. They do what most of these kids who just discovered HM-2 pedals last week can't seem to do correctly.
6. Celeste - Morte(s) Nee(s)
I'm thinking you might not want to listen to this if you are in fact depressed. The kind of suffocating darkness emanating from this EP may not help very much. It's blacker than black metal.
5. The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza - Danza III
there's "djent" and then there's this shit. Highly anticipated, and it fucking delivered. No more laughs, just carnage. The roster overhaul that happened was actually for the better. It's so much heavier than anything they've done so far.
4. Hooded Menace - never cross the dead
This record has been stuck in my head for the entire year. It wasn't quite like that at first, but in a month, it was stuck in there and it wasn't coming out for quite some time.
3. Starkweather - this sheltering night
This is truly the unsung metal/hardcore legends finest hour. Every song crushes, and most of the interludes are more than intriguing enough that you won't just hit "next".
2. Harvey Milk - a small turn of human kindness
it was a hard fought battle, but in the end it comes down to this. The saddest record ever is number two in 2010. Oh, what? what were you gonna say? "what about a dead sinking story". . . .no, that is now obsolete. Is that album about watching your pregnant lover take her own life? NO. SIT DOWN. Normally, I hate musicals. If they made one out of this, I'd bloody go see it. It's crushingly heavy, and then it's beautifully sad, and then it's crushingly heavy again.
1. Wormed - quasineutrality
"but it's a single" SHUT UP. These are the two best songs of the year. These two songs are my favorite thing I've heard this year. I heard this in March. Okay? It came out in March. From about then, to the end of the summer, I could not listen to either of these songs just once. On repeat in the car, bouncing around in my seat. Seriously. More Sci-Fi than Fear Factory (the fucking PREDATOR IS ON VOCALS MAN!), doing Cryptopsy better than Cryptopsy have done Cryptopsy in years, and catchy as fuck to boot. Wormed, with just two songs, surpassed all the brutal death metal full lengths released since probably 2008. . .at least. They've left everyone wanting more, and I don't know how the next full album they release will measure up to this. I have some hope though.

This year, you had 4 bands achieve major returns to form. Two of them made the top 40, the following didn't quite make the top 40. . .
Ion Dissonance: With their album Cursed, fueled by butthurt from the reaction to that piece of shit Minus the Herd, made the album they should have made two years ago. (PS - the lyrics still suck)
. . but the biggest comeback of 2010. . .
Immolation: I don't know what got into this band after Failures for Gods. They had lost it for quite some time. Plagued with overproduction and a lack of memorable riffs, 4 albums and one EP of fail commenced. A whole decade of boring crap. Then, all of a sudden, they just got it back. The modern production still does them no favors, but fuck it, they're back. The whole thing sounds like it could have been on Here in After.
disappointment of 2010: Deftones - diamond eyes. . . . . . .this is a straight up hatefest that has been brewing since the summer. *ahem*
Not since Foo Fighters jumped the shark with the Colour and the Shape has an album shrunk on me as quickly and this bad as Diamond Eyes did. What the fuck? Why the fuck does everyone like this thing? Even Stef's Meshuggah fandom could not save this record, try as he might. "this place is death" and "976-EVIL" are the only good songs. yeah, I don't even like "CMND/CNTRL" anymore. It sounds like POD with 8-string guitars. 8-string guitars, obviously, cannot save POD. . nor can they save Linkin Park, which is exactly what half of 'beauty school' sounds like. "sextape" is fucking awful. fucking awful. Seriously. I went into itunes and highlighted the song "diamond eyes", went to "get info" went to "options" and put "2:46" as the start time. I did this so it would only play the end of the song BECAUSE IT'S THE ONLY FUCKING GOOD PART!!! That teaser for the Diamond Eyes video should have been the whole video, because it was just that part. Had i not heard the song already, I'd have seen that and got all excited, and then heard the whole song and said "this thing fucking sucks. . . .oh wait, there's that part. . . oh, now it sucks again. . .oh, cool, that part. . .and it's over. . this fucking sucked". I'm not gonna talk about the song that is stolen from an old Will Haven record (and not anywhere as good). I'm not gonna talk about the 4 songs where they sound like one of those bands that tries to sound like the Deftones. Saturday Night Wrist was so much better than this it is not even funny. I get people telling me "you know, they were trying to go for a more upbeat sound because of what just happened". . .well, guys, you should have gone on hiatus instead. I think the label wanted a record NOW, and you grabbed another bassist and cranked out this piece of garbage. Fuck you. You FAIL

the long awaited return of the only band allowed to get away with having pig squeals. . .and you'll know why after you hear it
24. Gods And Queens - untitled
the songs still have no names, the lyrics are still bummer as fuck, and this is still the best thing you can put on on a dreary ass day. . .which there were a lot of this year.
23. Psychotic Despair - personal identity
if you're a fan of Ingrowing or Afgrund's latest album, do yourself a favor and pick this up.
22. Magrudergrind - crusher
crushING :)
21. Withered - Dualitas
this was the record where Withered won me over on CD. I already liked thier live show, but I didn't think Folie Circulair sounded quite as good as they did in a live setting. This sounds more like it, not to mention the songs are better.
20. Throats - Throats
Go figure they broke up already. Such a great record, short as it is. Hell, all they did was splits and this album. We hardly knew them. They sure did leave a path of destruction behind them though.
19. cali≠gari - janai
The first "j-rock" band to make it on to one of these lists in a LONG TIME. It's tiher mest material since Dai 7, and apparently they broke up AGAIN right after. Considering they broke up after what wasn't their best record the first time, this is a much better note to leave on.
18. The Abominable Iron Sloth - the Id Will Overcome
the Sloth bring a more traditional sludge sound than on the first record, and they do so really well.
17. Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini
I'd all but given up on this band. Thier prog side had taken over, and fun was not had. This year though, it seems they've decided to play *gasp* METAL.?! In doing so, they've given us the best "nu-enslaved" album. Yes, even with Jonas Renske impersonator keyboardist playing good cop.
16. Fistula - Goat
This is some harsh shit. I went a good two months listening to this non-stop.
15. Punished Earth - rhapsodies of decay
Did I say Circle of Dead Children were the only band allowed to have pig squeals? I meant only AMERICAN band.
14. Early Graves - GONER
The tragic death of vocalist Makh Daniels hit me pretty hard. This album, hit even harder. True, a hundred other bands made this album this year. True, the first album was better. . .but the fact is only two "entombed-core" bands were good enough to make this list. These guys made the list because they kept it high on the death(and in some cases GRIND) and low on the "n'roll".

still the best of the new old death metal bands
12. HAARP - the filth
in a year where "beard metal" was all the rage, haarp play fucking SLUDGE
11. Admiral Angry - a fire to burn down the world
The late great Daniel Krauss left us all with a little bit less than a half hour of pure, unadulterated OUCH. 23:38. You look at that, you're expecting maybe 2 minutes of song and 20 minutes of ambient what-the-fuck-ever. no. The last 7 minutes of the song are a final killing blow. A spirit bomb if you will. I really hate to cheapen such an experience with a Dragon Ball reference, but it fits.
10. Dax Riggs - say goodnight to the world
the voice. . .is. . .BACK!
9. Excrementory Grindfuckers - Headliner Der Herzen /The Left Rights - bad choice made easy
The most fun things I heard this year. Excrementory bringing the perfect combo of heaviness and being a fucking laugh riot. . .whether you know the language or not. They're no novelty band. The Left Rights returned this year, surpassing the band from which they spawned. They'd make you dance, if you weren't so busy rolling on the floor laughing your ass off.
8. Nails - unsilent death
Nails are the other "entombed-core" band that made it here. 90% of this is straight up grindcore like Trap Them used to make way back when.
7. Masakari - the profit feeds
The problem with a lot of these new d-beat bands is they're just not fast enough. This band gets it. They do what most of these kids who just discovered HM-2 pedals last week can't seem to do correctly.
6. Celeste - Morte(s) Nee(s)
I'm thinking you might not want to listen to this if you are in fact depressed. The kind of suffocating darkness emanating from this EP may not help very much. It's blacker than black metal.
5. The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza - Danza III
there's "djent" and then there's this shit. Highly anticipated, and it fucking delivered. No more laughs, just carnage. The roster overhaul that happened was actually for the better. It's so much heavier than anything they've done so far.
4. Hooded Menace - never cross the dead
This record has been stuck in my head for the entire year. It wasn't quite like that at first, but in a month, it was stuck in there and it wasn't coming out for quite some time.
3. Starkweather - this sheltering night
This is truly the unsung metal/hardcore legends finest hour. Every song crushes, and most of the interludes are more than intriguing enough that you won't just hit "next".
2. Harvey Milk - a small turn of human kindness
it was a hard fought battle, but in the end it comes down to this. The saddest record ever is number two in 2010. Oh, what? what were you gonna say? "what about a dead sinking story". . . .no, that is now obsolete. Is that album about watching your pregnant lover take her own life? NO. SIT DOWN. Normally, I hate musicals. If they made one out of this, I'd bloody go see it. It's crushingly heavy, and then it's beautifully sad, and then it's crushingly heavy again.
1. Wormed - quasineutrality
"but it's a single" SHUT UP. These are the two best songs of the year. These two songs are my favorite thing I've heard this year. I heard this in March. Okay? It came out in March. From about then, to the end of the summer, I could not listen to either of these songs just once. On repeat in the car, bouncing around in my seat. Seriously. More Sci-Fi than Fear Factory (the fucking PREDATOR IS ON VOCALS MAN!), doing Cryptopsy better than Cryptopsy have done Cryptopsy in years, and catchy as fuck to boot. Wormed, with just two songs, surpassed all the brutal death metal full lengths released since probably 2008. . .at least. They've left everyone wanting more, and I don't know how the next full album they release will measure up to this. I have some hope though.

This year, you had 4 bands achieve major returns to form. Two of them made the top 40, the following didn't quite make the top 40. . .
Ion Dissonance: With their album Cursed, fueled by butthurt from the reaction to that piece of shit Minus the Herd, made the album they should have made two years ago. (PS - the lyrics still suck)
. . but the biggest comeback of 2010. . .
Immolation: I don't know what got into this band after Failures for Gods. They had lost it for quite some time. Plagued with overproduction and a lack of memorable riffs, 4 albums and one EP of fail commenced. A whole decade of boring crap. Then, all of a sudden, they just got it back. The modern production still does them no favors, but fuck it, they're back. The whole thing sounds like it could have been on Here in After.
disappointment of 2010: Deftones - diamond eyes. . . . . . .this is a straight up hatefest that has been brewing since the summer. *ahem*
Not since Foo Fighters jumped the shark with the Colour and the Shape has an album shrunk on me as quickly and this bad as Diamond Eyes did. What the fuck? Why the fuck does everyone like this thing? Even Stef's Meshuggah fandom could not save this record, try as he might. "this place is death" and "976-EVIL" are the only good songs. yeah, I don't even like "CMND/CNTRL" anymore. It sounds like POD with 8-string guitars. 8-string guitars, obviously, cannot save POD. . nor can they save Linkin Park, which is exactly what half of 'beauty school' sounds like. "sextape" is fucking awful. fucking awful. Seriously. I went into itunes and highlighted the song "diamond eyes", went to "get info" went to "options" and put "2:46" as the start time. I did this so it would only play the end of the song BECAUSE IT'S THE ONLY FUCKING GOOD PART!!! That teaser for the Diamond Eyes video should have been the whole video, because it was just that part. Had i not heard the song already, I'd have seen that and got all excited, and then heard the whole song and said "this thing fucking sucks. . . .oh wait, there's that part. . . oh, now it sucks again. . .oh, cool, that part. . .and it's over. . this fucking sucked". I'm not gonna talk about the song that is stolen from an old Will Haven record (and not anywhere as good). I'm not gonna talk about the 4 songs where they sound like one of those bands that tries to sound like the Deftones. Saturday Night Wrist was so much better than this it is not even funny. I get people telling me "you know, they were trying to go for a more upbeat sound because of what just happened". . .well, guys, you should have gone on hiatus instead. I think the label wanted a record NOW, and you grabbed another bassist and cranked out this piece of garbage. Fuck you. You FAIL

and, all the songs are recorded.
I'm going into editing/arrangement/mixing mode on it as we speak.

Yet another J-rock band I loved in college got back together, and I heard nothing.
First, Kuroyume play reunion shows, and I have no chance to save up and go to Japan and see them

then, I almost don't hear that Daisuke from Kagerou died 2 weeks ago(R.I.P. - for the record, this was the last good Kagerou song)
now, SADS ARE BACK!!!!
and they're even better than they were when they went on hiatus in 2003 (probably after Kiyoharu realized Dir en grey were ripping him off again :) I kid, I kid, the last Dir single was actually really good. . . . but for real, there's some real SADS ripoff songs on Kisou. . and I say that as someone who thinks Kisou is THEE best Dir album).
It's like lynch. with a WAY better singer. (face it weaboos, Kiyoharu is better than every visual kei singer. . . .ever)
2. My buddy Reaper has been recommending Ihsahn's newest solo album to me for the last 2 months. Ihsahn. You know Ihsahn. don't you? you don't remember this?

I checked out the new album this weekend. I youtubed some songs, and I found a song from the second album that also features Mikey Akerfeldt from Opeth.
how come metal guys in Europe know how to do good cop bad cop vocals without sounding like little children?

Ihsahn's new album fucking rules. I guess you might say it's like Opeth if they were heavy more than 20% of the time. He used 8 sring guitars on this album, and there's a saxophone player

after last night it's hard to shine. . .
another found random tape.
I heard this song when i was maybe 15 or 16, and no joke, I thought it sounded like the Rza fronting a hardcore band. . . .and of course, there was that news that the Rza was working with a hardcore band called Dog Eat Dog. . but I never heard any of that. It probably didn't sound like this.
Indie rock used to kick your ass like metal. Think about it, the Jesus Lizard, Drive Like Jehu, Slint and of course all those Amphetamine Reptile bands influenced most of the GOOD metalcore bands in the world (I'm talking about bands like Coalesce, Converge and Botch).
Of course, only now am I figuring out which band is which. Radio shows used to play Rodan, Hoover, Slint, Silkworm and June of 44 back to back, and not say who they played.
I swear I'm gonna post more random tapes. . . but I've had no guesses for the current ones.

just finished watching Spain finally beat Paraguay
(Larissa Riquelme's tears of unfathomable sadness are so yummy and sweet. . . .and they make good lube)
Semi Finals should be excellent.

because all I do besides watch soccer is listen to tunes. . .
Nachtmystium - Addicts: Black Meddle pt 2
I've given this band quite a few chances, and they've not held my attention at all. I heard somebody compare this album to Killing Joke on some level, so I youtubed it one day. I hope they don't plan on dragging metal into the "coalition to bring back new wave/disco" that is indie rock of the last decade. We don't need that. We already have so called "metalcore" bands using autotune, etc. Out of the 3 dance tracks on this record, "ruined life continuum" is the most tolerable. I liked 4 other songs on the album, including the one that actually does sound a little bit like Killing Joke. I haven't felt like listening to it again though. This band are pretty overrated, but nice try anyway.

Killing Joke - In Exelsis EP
. . .why listen to something that is said to sound like Killing Joke when you can just listen to bloody Killing Joke? Right? 4 brand new songs. I don't know how many will be on the recently postponed full length, but if they are any indication of what that's going to sound like, I dont' think they're doing any epics this time around. The longest song is the very reggae "ghost of ladbroke grove"(there's even a dub version). KJ have their full original line-up back now, and it seems that has brought about a change. I don't hear any industrial in these songs, for one thing . . .and there's nothing I could call metal on it either. Dare I say it's a return to the sound of "democracy"? "kali yuga" sounds like "intellect". If you were into that album, I'd say you should really check this out and stay tuned for the upcoming album. Between Democracy and pandemonium, I liked Democracy better, so this is right up my alley (as much as i would be even more psyched for another record like Extremities).

I love how crushing it is, I love how harsh it is, I love the trumpet interlude before the last song.
I just love it.
Get the bloody thing.

the Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza - Danza III
Being a When Knives Go Skyward fanboy, I had no doubt when thier guitarist joined Danza there was gonna be some crazy shit coming up. What I didn't know til recently was that singer dude is the only member left that played on Danza II. This is very different, a cross between Danza, Knives and a little bit of new Fear Factory (the production especially is very similar to Mechanize), combining like the Constructicons and wrecking shop all over the place. They've all but dropped their sense of humor from the music, but unlike some bands have the tunes to back it up(and they still find time to make the guitars go "woo hoo"). It's everything "djent" could be, if those bands weren't busy writing pop hits. Yes, they keep it harsh, all the way to the end, with not just one but TWO climactic closers. After the gauranteed pile-on closing track, wait a bit and in comes the hidden track, uncharacteristically speedy at the beginning and at it's close far more crushing than anything they've done before. Ion Dissonance, the Acacia Strain and several others take note, the challenge has been thrown down. This is the downtuned-to-hell metalcore record to beat.

3 days of not hating life
only a week this time

The main reason I wasn't posting was that I was getting ready for my vacation. Maryland Death Fest VIII!!
THE ONLY GOOD THING ABOUT 2010!!
This was my 5th time attending the death metal party of the year.
I didn’t get to go to the pre-fest, but from Friday to about 3 quarters into Sunday, I was in headbangers heaven. . the sort of thing Fenriz describes in that Darkthrone song “hanging out in haiger”.
I saw a LOT of bands. Many of which I missed out on seeing, or even hearing due to my late bloomer status, or just having too much stuff to possibly hear it all. . .which, there is. A good portion of me concert going in the last couple years has been reliving stuff I never experienced in the first place.
I saw a LOT of bands, but these are my highlights. . . . in no chronological order (because I did not have the schedules when I got home. . .where'd they g?!o)
Black Breath - Black Breath fucking BROUGHT IT!!!! Loud as fuck, stage presence beyond compare, just owned the day.
Coffins - I saw them back in 2008. They made my night by playing "mortification to ruin" second. Best song. They did the same thing this year, but they slowed that shit down to a crawl. I thought it was just for the intro, but they played the entire song almost twice as slow as it's supposed to be. COFFINS CHOPPED AND SCREWED THEIR OWN SONG. They probably could've just walked off stage after that. I don't know how you follow that. It was awesome and ridiculous and awesome. I wish there was video of it somewhere. People need to hear that shit.
Autopsy - I had somehow never heard this band until MDF weekend. I was kicking myself for that by the end of the performance.
Jucifer - Some time ago, I remember there was a song of theirs on Headbangers Ball that was decidedly not very heavy. That was all I'd heard. I don't remember it very well. I checked them out on the Saturday and HO LY FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! First of all, wall of amps like what??!?!?! Amber has a wall of amps comparable to that of the Maximum Louisville bands. Bigger than Breather Resist's for sure. God dayum. The abrasive chaotic sludge made a fan out of me for sure.
Gridlink - Gridlink played their entire new album for the MDF attendees, and I don't know how many shows they've played with this full line-up (they even have a bass player now). Not the best sound, but the energy was NUTS.
Portal - I knew the venue wouldn't get their sound right, especially once I saw the guitars were 8 string. I didn't know this before. Being that it was a big wall of noise (made more inaudible by my earplugs. . .which were needed. . . don't even put this band and My Bloody Valentine on the same bill), it was a damn good performance for what it was.
Just imagine that with more bass.
When they got to the end of the song "werships", it was crushing as all fuck. They need their own sound engineer though.
Tombs - I've seen this band a lot in the past couple years, but the thing about them is everytime I go see them they have completely new material they didn't play last time I saw them, and it's all really good. They only played one song I'd heard before at MDF. I'm looking forward to pretty much anything new they release.
D.R.I. - I wish they would've played some more of the early punk stuff. . . . .they are playing my little hole in the wall town pretty soon, and I will certainly be going.
Possessed - Possessed had a mishap the day they were supposed to play, so they jumped on half of Sadistic Intent's set (since Possessed are essentially SI with Jeff Becerra) and TORE SHIT UP! I say this, even though they did not play "seven churches" (denied).
Gorguts - I forget the name of that internet radio statin was. . .KNAC? Back in 98, I downloaded one of thier radio shows and they had the song "orphans of sickness" by Goruts on it. It was the first Gorguts song I ever heard. Gorguts played MDF, and it was about the 3rd or 4th song they played. This was one of the moments that made my day.
Rottenness - this was some surprisingly good porno gore grind, with hilarious between song banter, and raucous guest vocals by Mitch from Maruta.
Total Fucking Destruction - I've seen them a lot of times. I saw them in '06 when one of them was dressed like a member of Polyphonic Spree (or was that '07). This was by far the strangest, and funniest performance. They had this girl on stage with them, screaming randomly. Actually, the first song was the best part. Everyone on stage was just screaming their heads off, and those in front of the crowd joined in. It was also one of the only performances I managed to get a spot up front for.
Eyehategod - Amazing to finally get to see this band. They played "dixie whisky" and fun was had.
Jesus Crost - This band remind me of Yacopsae with how fast and tight they are.
Repulsion - I'd been waiting to see this band since '08, when they cancelled. It was certainly worth the wait. It was pretty awesome when Marissa Martinez joined them for two songs. (and I really hope they have Cretin play next year)
Watain - oh wait, they threw blood at people? and pushed the guy from DRI off stage?
I wasn't up front for them, I missed most of this. They sounded pretty awesome though. The whole crowd shouted along with "sworn to the dark". That shit was nuts.
Sulaco - I had forgotten they were playing, and was thrown off by the new songs that had no vox, but they were awesome.
I didn't get to see Converge's whole set (or Magrudergrinds for that matter) because some dumb shit happened that I had to clear up.. . . .but what I saw of both bands sets, they ripped it (by the way, don't use hotels.com, if for some stupid reason your card gets declined when you attempt to make your reservation, they won't tell you. They'll send you a confirmation e-mail as if everything is fine.)
It's gonna take a lot to top Bolt Thrower twice in one weekend, but once again they put on an excellent fest (even if it's hard to circle pit on a hill. . . . . .can some thrash band write a song about that??).
onward to 2011!!

the random verdicts
I usually post these in my journal on last.fm, but I need more content for this blog. . .so yeah, the random verdicts. . .
these will very often be pretty short. . .
I'm not the guy from Grind and Punishment. He's way better at this than me(read it, it's AWESOME).
anyway, here's some stuff I heard. . .
Jucifer - Throned in Blood
let me find out. . . . .
I can't remember the name of the song I heard some years ago before, but it sounded like Veruca Salt and I thought it was forgettable. . . though, I probably would've eaten it up when I was 17. I was at Maryland Death Fest again, and they were playing, and I checked them out on a whim.
um, what?!?!?!?!?
They were smashing shit, it was amazing. I was told most of what they played was on the new record, so I got that, and the one before it.
This album, is brutal abrasive downtuned sludge all the way through. On other albums, they'll go from crazy brutal shit, to what Magic Dirt used to sound like before they got all poppy. Not here. Fitting for the subject matter (war), eh? There's one acoustic song at the very end. Perfect closer I think.

Circle of Dead Children – Psalm of the Grand Destroyer
After mishaps the level of Soilent Green, CODC return with their first album in 7 years to show all the little kiddies how it's done. This is the only band in the country that should be allowed to use pig squeals anymore (seriously, Joe should go to the studio one of these little kid bands are recording in and regulate). Prepare for the best production of all the CODC records. Zero Comfort Margin got me into this band, and it sounded like they didn’t even have a bass player (which is fine, if you don’t have a bass player. . .but CODC do). On this, you hear everything, and it’s heavy as balls. It's also got the best drumming of all the CODC albums. I really hope it's not another 7 years.

Celeste - Morte(s) Nee(s)
Already?!?!?! They just had that killer album last year, and here they come again already with a new EP. It sounds twice as dark as misanthrope(s), and not just because they tuned lower again. When you hit track 5, it’s more crushing than anything last record. It’s slow, and bleak and just really fucking doomy. . .even if the riffing is still a little black metal in nature (Celeste are succeeding at the sound Dark Funeral has been trying to do for years and failing). This dirge continues into the next track where vocals finally come in, and OH MY GOD, FADES OUT! Then the 13 minute closer hits you like a tank, and runs you over, and then backs up over you, and then runs over you again and continues doing this for half the song. Then, when they’re sure they’ve completely squashed you like a bug, they get out of the truck and they hang around and brood over your flattened body (complete with violins) for the other half of the song.
None more black.
. . .no seriously, I need to emphasize how bleak this album is. It makes Grief sound like posicore. This band is like suicidal black metal mixed with funeral doom.
The lyrics are all in French, but the emotion is evident in this music.

Clinging to the Trees of a Forest Fire - Songs of Ill Hope and Desperation
CTFF play music which exemplifies blind rage. That was incredibly evident on "Alpha. . .". They have somehow turned up the blind rage on this fittingly titled record. It sounds just as heavy as last album. . .except the drums. They're pretty light in comparison. Everything else is crushing. The vocals sound like two people screaming at you at once. . .and that guy was always one of the most pissed sounding vocalists of the last couple years. The production probably won't stop the ignorant little kids from lumping this band in with "deathcore" . . .or at least, what the next Robinson album might've sounded like had that not been an April Fools prank by Debello(the guitars can be very Robinson-ish). . . .but the slow sludgy parts might. "recession" is the best song. The whole record is dark as fuck, but when they pause after the intro and kick back in harsher than before, you might not be sure what hit you. I think it's the only song that comes close to equaling a track like "crystalis" or "velveteen walls" from the last one. It keeps on hitting you though. You only get two breaks really, the slower part in "made of coal", and the almost quiet part in the very last song "remove the light". This is one of the few albums to come out that I think truly captures the vibe of this year (which is becoming worse than the last). It's not posi. I said it before, this is an aptly titled record.

Harvey Milk - A Small Turn Of Kindness
I just heard this band for the first time this year, when "self titled" came out. I'd been hearing about them, but just hadn't thought to check them out. Then they got on that Converge tour, so I gave them a listen and quite liked it. They've been around FOREVER though. I'm way behind, I've only heard this one, "self titled" and "my love. . ". I don't know shit. Just saying. Anyway, this is their 7th album. It's is one of those albums you buy just to read the lyrics. I'm sitting here the whole time like "what is he talking about?". I managed to pick out choice lines, and suffice to say (to paraphrase the great Steve Albini) this is a sad fuckin' song. It's slow, dramatic and doomy as fuck. It tells a story that I cannot wait to read along with in it's entirety. I hear people who've known about this band forever saying this is a little disappointing, but I just got into them and it's my favorite. Sue me. It might have something to do with the fact that when I first listened to it I was sick as dog, and it fit my mood exactly, but I've recovered somewhat and it's still my favorite.
